Terriers: There are over 22 dog breeds included in the Terrier group. The dogs vary in size and shape from the very small Norwich Terrier (10 inches, 10 pounds) to the Airedale (23 inches, 55 pounds) to the American Staffordshire (18 inches, 70 pounds). Terriers have been used for a variety of purposes including guarding, pit fighting, and especially hunting small predators such as: rats, badgers, foxes, and rabbits. They are known for their tenacious temperament and are admired for their ability to hunt andwork relentlessly. With proper training and socialization they can make good house pets. This group includes:

Airedale Terrier, *American Hairless Terrier, Australian Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Border Terrier, Cairn Terrier, *Cesky Terrie, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Fox Terrier, Irish Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Manchester Terrier (Standard), Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, *Rat Terrier, Schnauzer (Miniature), Scottish Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Skye Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, *Tenterfield Terrier, Welsh Terrier, West Highland White Terrier

Herding Breeds:The group Herding Dogs is a relatively new classification of dogs that have had a history of or have been bred specifically for herding purposes. These are intelligent, active, and athletic dogs. They can make good house pets with the proper environment and obedience training. Most of these dogs love to work and are eager to please. This group separates some dogs formerly known as Working Dogs into a new Herding Dog group. Herding Dogs includes:

Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres, Briard, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, *English Shepherd, *Dutch Shepherd Dog, German Shepherd Dog, *White Shepherd, Polski Owczarek Nizinny, Old English Sheepdog, Shetland Sheepdog, *Norwegian Buhund, *Vastgotaspets (Swedish Vallhund), *Lapponian Herder, *Schapendoes, *Catahoula Leopard Stock Dog

Working Breeds:This class is made up of about thirty breeds used mostly for herding, guarding, as guides and rescue dogs. Most of these dogs are large to enormous in size. A few are considered small. The dogs in this group are usually territorial, strong, and confident. They need a strong confident leader to master their temperament. Some of the dogs in this group make excellent companions and are commonly used to assist humans for their original purpose. Working Dogs include the following breeds:

Sporting Breeds:This group includes dogs that have been specifically bred for pointing, flushing, or retrieving game. A few dogs in this group may be used as guide dogs or as protection dogs. Most of these dogs need a lot of exercise! The list includes 24 breeds adapted for hunting: 7 breeds of pointers, 5 breeds of retrievers, 3 breeds of setters, and 9 breeds of spaniels.

Toy Breeds:This group is made up of tiny dogs weighing from one to eighteen pounds with the average being eight pounds. The dogs in this group have been bred for pampering and protecting. They are usually very sensitive to extremes in temperature as they do not have the body mass to maintain heat. Tiny dogs did not evolve naturally; humans bred and altered them specifically for their small size to be held and coddled. Due to their small size and sensitivity to the environment, The Toys would have difficulty surviving without human care. This group includes about 18 breeds:
